THE DIVINE ESSENCE

DIVINE ESSENCE - A Beginning Definition

Divine essence is referred to in Hasidic Judaism, a religion founded in the 18th century as a reaction against overly legalistic Judaism. In Hasidic thought, divine essence attempts to explain the relationship between an eternal and mysterious Creator and the mortal and finite universe. According to Hinduism, humans have a divine essence of an impersonal nature called Atman. Divine essence is also sometimes referred to in yoga, where yoga means union with the divine or higher self. There is even a place called Divine Essence Yoga in San Francisco.

In a recent theological discussion an acquaintance considered a non-personal god as “The Divine Essence”. When asked to define the word “essence”, he looked it up in the Merriam Webster dictionary and cited:
Definition of ESSENCE: a) the permanent as contrasted with the accidental element of being.

At The End of The Day Is The Divine Essence

I have a friend who often uses my ear as a sounding board. At the end of describing some important issue she will always sum it up with a succinct conclusion using either, “at the end of the day”, or “in essence.” I believe these two idioms express the Divine Essence in the beginning of the Bible as its foundation.

At the beginning of any important communication, if even a phone call, a book, or the Bible, there needs to be an unambiguous introduction. So, it is important that God should introduce His attributes as they relate to man in terms of time in order to differentiate Himself from temporal man, and man’s temporal gods.

If we open the Bible to the first page of scripture, I see God’s introduction. I see the permanent Divine Essence at the end of the dayin essence, the first day image of God.
And there was evening, and there was morning, the first day.(Genesis 1:5)

The Essence of Salvation Truth

It is necessary to see God with three attributes of evening, morning and day as a path, because the Bible is a spiritual manual for salvation so that man can return to God. How, then, are these three attributes of God a salvation path back to God?

Most Christians would agree that the path of salvation is simply man-Jesus-God, where the Bible describes the 3-way image of man with three attributes of body-soul-spirit (1 Thess 5:23). Jesus described this 3-way path as the way-truth-Light in John 5:23, and even said man must be born 3-ways in the flesh, water, and spirit (John 3:5,6). Since it is written that man was created in the image of God (Gen 1:27), it is necessary that man should return to God in this same image of God that man was created into. Therefore, it is concluded:

And there was evening (for the body of man who leads to darkness), and there was morning (for the soul of man who always leads to Light in the spirit), the first day. (Genesis 1:5)

Given then, at the end of the day (each day of the Creation), in essence is The Divine Essence, whose perfect attributes of evening, morning, and day define the essence of the Perfect Salvation.

In terms of time the days of natural man are finitely numbered. So, to find the Perfect Salvation in the infinite image of God you must KNOW the true God of the Bible, the same God that Jesus knew. Time is of the essence.

Divine Essence Definition

Conclusion: Definition of DIVINE ESSENCE: a) the permanent (Eternal God) as contrasted with the accidental element of being (such as a mere slice of time).
